Saddlemount Cards - Our New Range of Greetings Cards!

Posted by Susan Robertson on

Well here we are in 2019 and I can't quite believe that it has been almost 5 months since my last blog post - where has that time gone?

Quarter 4 of 2018 was exceptionally busy for us as we sell on 6 different platforms. As well as making and sending out orders we decided to expand our product range. After a lot of "what about this" and "what about that"we decided that a range of Greetings Cards would be a good fit with our current products.

Saddlemount Cards was born!

Of course it's not that easy to make the decision a reality!

First of all we researched whether we should put the designs out to a commercial printer, or do them ourselves (as we do with all our products). We settled on printing in house so the next step was to pick a suitable machine that could handle a good quality card, give sharp vibrant images and be able to print volume.

After much deliberation and pouring over countless specifications we settled on a Xerox Phaser 7800 - the only thing we forgot to look at was the actual size!

We naively assumed it would be a similar size to our desk top ink jet printers and sublimation printers - how wrong we were!

When the delivery man arrived with the new machine it had to be taken off the lorry ( yes lorry, not van!) with a fork lift and it weighs 12 stone!!

The photo is of the box sat in our hallway after delivery. It sat there for nearly a month whilst we figured out a way to get it to our upstairs office - we failed!

In the end we decided to convert a downstairs room into a 2nd office and run the card production from there.

It took us a little while to sort out the workings of the printer and at the moment we're only using a fraction of what it is capable of doing but we love it!

The laser printing means the images are sharp and it easily handles the 350 gsm silk card stock which we are using for our designs.

We did experiment with a few card finishes but we like the way the laser gives the designs a sheen finish on the silk card.

Saddlemount CardsSpeaking of designs, ( you can't have a card business with them!!) Roy is designing new cards every day and they are gradually being added to our sites. Some of the designs compliment our existing mug and coaster designs but some are completely new - the only thing they all have in common is that they are all original to us and the back of each card has a logo which says so!
